For one thing, there aren’t any, and I mean NONE, of the tired romance tropes that exist in this book. In fact, this book was a bit more women’s fiction than romance, if I’m being honest. While I think it can still be classified as romance by the rules of the genre, it’s more about Lily’s life experiences and the lessons she’s learning about herself than anything else. There’s a romantic gift, but I don’t think that’s the main focus of the story. While I’m not usually a fan of women’s literature, I think if this book had taken a different path it wouldn’t have been as powerful.

I don’t normally read reviews before starting a book. In fact, I didn’t even read the blurb for this one, or if I did, I forgot before I started reading. I like it. I think going blind with an open mind and minimal expectations is the way to go. While the twists and turns aren’t 100% unexpected, the author has been very successful in knocking the rug out from under my feet on more than one occasion.

I’m not usually a fan of books where people say, ‘Wow, that got me thinking. The book is a thinker.” I usually just roll my eyes internally, assuming that readers are being played as emotional pawns. i know i’m reasonable But in this case, yes, I’ve been thinking a lot. It made me reevaluate how I perceive others and their relationships, and made me reconsider my prejudices. People are always know-it-alls until they find themselves in the same situation, and then it doesn’t seem so easy anymore.

The author has made one right decision after another with this story. I think that’s the key to success. The author created a relatable human character in Lily and gave each minor character their pros and cons. There are no villains here. There are no easy answers. Colleen Hoover also made the incredibly wise decision to only let Lily narrate the story. There was really no other choice, but it gave the readers a laser focus on them, and that’s what our focus should be.

Although this book has a happy ending, it is also a story that can be described as brave, difficult, hopeful, powerful and devastating at the same time. It’s a long story, but it’s fast-paced with plot elements set at the right times to keep things interesting. I couldn’t put the book down from the moment I got into the groove and I read this story all night to the last page. It’s also important to read the dedication, but make sure you do it after you’ve finished the story and not before.
